Uttar Pradesh (before division into Uttranchal) is bounded between latitudes 23º 45' and 31º 30' North and longitudes 77º 0' and 85º0' East and has a geographic area of about 294 lac hectare. Bounded by ranges of Himalayas in North and Vindhyas in South with Gangetic Plains lying in between in elongated shape in west-east direction. Physiographically it is divided into three regions. | HIMALAYAN REGION : | Highly rugged and varied terrain; transferred to Uttranchal State Varying topography; elevation ranges from 300 to 5000 m Slope ranges from 150 to 600 m/km. | | GANGETIC PLAINS : | Highly fertile alluvial soils. Flat topography broken by numerous ponds, lakes and rivers. Slope 2 m/km | Elevation ranges above MSL | | Western | 170 to 275 | | Central | 100 to 170 | | Eastern | 075 to 100 |
